Giving blood is always a huge event in someone elses life. We learned that the hard way. Please give blood in Madison’s honor. THANK YOU!
2010 Bataan Memorial Death March
It’s been five years since the start of “Miles for Maddy,” the charity organization started by Pete Pukish to help his niece Madison Ringenberg through her health challenges and the financial problems that come with DiGeorge syndrome. It all started with a 26.2 mile run through White Sands Missile Range New Mexico and a 45lb backpack (they suggested 35 lb but you know Pete!). That run several years ago was made into a fundraiser and was the beginning of “Miles for Maddy” a program developed for runners around the world to contribute towards helping improve the quality of life for this tiny girl who is fighting DiGeorge syndrome so bravely.
Satori Martial Arts is continually looking for ways to give of themselves to help support organizations in need. In March 2010 Eugene du Plessis and Luke Von Esh made the Bataan run with Pete Pukish. The 26.2 mile Bataan Memorial Death March is an incredible physical challenge through the high desert terrain in New Mexico at altitudes of 4,100 to 5,300 feet. The race includes an 8-mile incline and a sand pit that is supposed to be roughly 3 miles, to be run while each runner carries a 45-pound backpack for the entire rigorous and demanding event.
The run is a prerequisite for Sensei Eugene du Plessis as he is working towards his fourth degree Black Belt in Satori Karate. In line with the nature of Satori, the upper level Black Belt exams never focus on the individual but on the individual working on things bigger than themselves. In this spirit, this years trek will be focused on raising support for Maddy.
Madison Ringenberg suffers from DiGeorge syndrome. At age 7, Maddy has had more surgeries than her family could count. She has three more major procedures scheduled this spring including one that will put a more definitive date on her 3rd upcoming open-heart surgery. Please consider sponsoring these three runners who are physically, mentally and emotionally giving all that they’ve got to help improve the quality and longevity of Madison’s life.
This past December, Karate teacher Ridgely Abele, a 9th degree black belt and teacher to Pete Pukish, succumbed his battle with cancer. In his memory, a portion of the funds raised from this event will be given to his charity of choice: The Womens resource center to end domestic violence.
More than anything, we ask for your prayers for the health of Madison as well as for the Bataan runners.
